Abstract

Joshua C. Fleetwood was a Democrat and Baptist of Hertford, Perquimans County, N.C. Fleetwood's diary contains entries, 11 September-10 October 1850, documenting his journey by horseback from Hertford through Louisburg, Hillsborough, and Pilot Mountain, N.C.; Wytheville and Abington, Va.; and Rogersville, Knoxville, Sparta, Nashville, and Columbia, Tenn., to visit his uncle in Fayette County, Tenn. These entries describe the route traveled through North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee, and scenery along the way; the places Fleetwood stopped overnight and the quality of meals and lodging; the weather; and his traveling companions and other individuals he met, especially women in each stopping place. Fleetwood's account of his return trip, 6-25 January 1851, through Waynesborough, Shelbyville, Kingston, Knoxville, and Jonesborough, Tenn., is similar, but more vivid and detailed, with occasional mention of political and religious discussions Fleetwood had with his hosts. Also included are a record of expenses for the trip; miscellaneous accounts, 1852-1858, including one in 1858 relating to a slave named Peter; and a eulogy for Samuel Pruden, minister of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, possibly in Northampton County, N.C., who died 12 February 1894.
