| Abstract | Franklin Gaillard (died 1864) was a Confederate officer with the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, Kershaw's Brigade. The collection includes photocopies of typed transcriptions of letters from Gaillard while serving with the Confederate army in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and east Tennessee. Most of the letters were written to his sister-in-law, Maria Porcher, who was caring for Gaillard's two children, whose mother had died. The letters contain detailed accounts of battles and other events, Gaillard's evaluations and speculations, description of his surroundings, social life in the areas he passed through, and news of friends and relatives. |

Scope and Content
The collection includes photocopies of typed transcriptions of letters from Franklin Gaillard while a Confederate officer with the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, Kershaw's Brigade, in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and east Tennessee. Most of the letters were written to his sister-in-law, Maria Porcher, who was caring for Gaillard's two children, whose mother had died. The letters contain detailed accounts of battles and other events, Gaillard's evaluations and speculations, description of his surroundings, social life in the areas he passed through, and news of friends and relatives. Letters were written from Winchester and Fredericksburg, Va.; Gettysburg, Pa; and near Chattanooga, Sweetwater, Bean's Station, New Market, and Warrensburg, Tenn.
