Most of the letters were written to his sister-in-law, Maria Porcher, who was caring for Gaillard's two children, whose mother had died. The letters contain detailed accounts of battles and other events, Gaillard's evaluations and speculations, description of his surroundings, social life in the areas he passed through, and news of friends and relatives. |
