Abstract
William Montgomery Gardner was a United States army officer and Confederate brigadier general. The collection includes chiefly letters from Gardner to his mother, Elizabeth Gardner, of Augusta, Ga., his sister, and his brother, from Mexico, 1847-1848, and California, 1849-1854, discussing military and social affairs. Also included are letters from P. G. T. Beauregard, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, and Alexander Hamilton Stephens; galley proofs of Gardner's memoirs, edited by Elizabeth McKinne Gardner; scrapbooks of clippings of Mrs. James Gardner; and a roster from the Mexican War.
