Abstract
From the 1950s through the 1990s, collector, folklorist, and traditional music performer Alice Gerrard recorded interviews and performances of many legendary old-time and bluegrass musicians.
The collection consists of audiocassette and open-reel tape recordings from 1954 to 2000, along with supporting logs and card files. The audio recordings include both live performances and Gerrard's interviews with many notable bluegrass and old-time musicians; master tapes from LP recording projects; and recordings of several of Gerrard's own bands, including the Strange Creek Singers, Tom, Brad, and Alice, the Harmony Sisters, the Barn Dance Band, and her partnerships with Andy Cahan, Hazel Dickens, and Mike Seeger. Of particular interest are live concert recordings featuring such musicians as E.C. Ball, Dock Boggs, Kahle Brewer, Otis Burris, Alex Campbell, Elizabeth Cotten, Cousin Emmy, Clyde Davenport, Luther Davis, Bert Dickens, Hazel Dickens, Norman Edmonds, Cathy Fink, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Gail Gillespie, Tommy Jarrell, Grandpa Jones, the Lilly Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, Marcus Martin, Sam McGee and Kirk McGee (the McGee Brothers), Bill Monroe and Charlie Monroe (the Monroe Brothers), the Osborne Brothers, A.C. Overton, Roscoe Parish and Leone Parish, Ola Belle Reed, Don Reno, Enoch Rutherford, Matokie Slaughter, Red Smiley, Kilby Snow, the Stanley Brothers, Ernest V. Stoneman, J.C. Sutphin, Robert Sykes, Wade Ward, Melvin Wine, Mac Wiseman, and many others. Performances were recorded at large and small venues, including New River Ranch near Rising Sun, Md.; Sunset Park, Pa.; the Union Grove Fiddlers Convention in North Carolina; the Bean Blossom Festival; the Galax Fiddlers' Convention; and musicians' homes. Gerrard recorded fiddle lessons and in-depth interviews with many of these musicians, including Tommy Jarrell, Luther Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, Hazel Dickens, and Roscoe and Leone Parrish. Other recordings of interest include raw tracks and master tapes for several of Gerrard's albums with Hazel Dickens; live recordings at folk festivals, colleges, and other venues; and three interviews Gerrard conducted with Bill Monroe. Supporting documentation includes Gerrard's logs for all of the audio recordings and card files created by Gerrard to index a portion of the recordings.

Biographical Note

Alice Gerrard has devoted her life to playing and preserving traditional music as a musician, collector, and the founding editor of The Old Time Herald.

The daughter and granddaughter of English and German immigrants, Gerrard was born in Seattle, Wash., and grew up in rural Washington and California, as well as in Guadalajara, Mexico. While a student at Antioch College, Gerrard began to teach herself to play the guitar and banjo. It was there as well that she was introduced to the Harry Smith Anthology of Folk Music, a collection that inspired many musicians of the folk revival. While living in the Washington, D.C., area in the 1950s and 1960s, she heard such local luminaries as the Stoneman Family and the Country Gentlemen, and was a regular attendee of country music parks including New River Ranch and Sunset Park, where she was involved in the recording of many important performances by bluegrass and country musicians. During this time, she also formed her own musical partnerships with West Virginia singer and songwriter Hazel Dickens and with collector and musician Mike Seeger. In the 1970s and 1980s, in the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina, she learned from and played with old-time masters Tommy Jarrell, Luther Davis, and Bert Dickens.

Alice Gerrard has recorded and appeared on many solo albums and with Hazel Dickens, Mike Seeger, and Peter Rowan, among others, and she has produced albums by other artists, including the Red Clay Ramblers and Cordelia's Dad. With Cecilia Conway, she co-produced the 1983 documentary "Sprout Wings and Fly" about fiddler Tommy Jarrell. In 1987, Alice Gerrard founded and began editing The Old Time Herald, which continues to be the leading publication about southern traditional country music. As of 2002, she was a member of the trio "Tom, Brad, and Alice" with fellow old-time musicians Tom Sauber and Brad Leftwich. She continues to be an important figure in the playing and preservation of traditional southern music.

Collection Overview

The Alice Gerrard collection includes over 700 audio recordings of interviews with and live performances by traditional and country music artists, spanning the years between the late 1950s through the early 1990s. There are also dubs of 78 rpm recordings.

The audio recordings include both live performances and Gerrard's interviews with many notable bluegrass and old-time musicians; master tapes from various LP recording projects; and recordings of several of Gerrard's own bands. Of particular interest are live concert recordings featuring such musicians as E.C. Ball, Dock Boggs, Kahle Brewer, Otis Burris, Alex Campbell, Elizabeth Cotten, Cousin Emmy, Clyde Davenport, Luther Davis, Bert Dickens, Hazel Dickens, Norman Edmonds, Cathy Fink, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, Gail Gillespie, Tommy Jarrell, Grandpa Jones, the Lilly Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, Marcus Martin, Sam McGee and Kirk McGee (the McGee Brothers), Bill Monroe and Charlie Monroe (the Monroe Brothers), the Osborne Brothers, A.C. Overton, Roscoe Parish and Leone Parish, Ola Belle Reed, Don Reno, Enoch Rutherford, Matokie Slaughter, Red Smiley, Kilby Snow, the Stanley Brothers, Ernest V. Stoneman, J.C. Sutphin, Robert Sykes, Wade Ward, Melvin Wine, Mac Wiseman, and many others.

Performances were recorded at large and small venues, including New River Ranch near Rising Sun, Md.; Sunset Park, Pa.; the Union Grove Fiddlers Convention in North Carolina; the Bean Blossom Festival; the Galax Fiddlers' Convention; and musicians' homes.

Gerrard recorded fiddle lessons and in-depth interviews with many of these musicians, including Luther Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, Hazel Dickens, and Roscoe and Leone Parrish, and other traditional musicians from the Galax, Va.-Mount Airy, N.C. area. Among these recordings are fiddle lessons with Tommy Jarrell, and interviews with his sister Julie Lyon and friend Corinna Bowden.

Other recordings of interest include raw tracks and master tapes for several of Gerrard's albums with Hazel Dickens and live recordings at folk festivals, colleges, and other venues, recorded by Gerrard and Jeremy Foster, Mike Seeger, and Pete Kuykendall. In 1968 and 1969, Gerrard conducted three interviews with Bill Monroe, recordings of which are included in the collection.

Supporting documentation includes Gerrard's logs for all of the audio recordings and card files organized by artist, song, and Library of Congress title.

Also included are recordings of rehearsals and performances by some of Gerrard's own musical groups, including the Strange Creek Singers, Tom, Brad & Alice, the Harmony Sisters, the Barn Dance Band, Dickens and Gerrard with the New Lost City Ramblers, and Gerrard's partnerships with Hazel Dickens, Andy Cahan, and Mike Seeger.

In addition to audio recordings, the collection includes log books compiled by Gerrard detailing the contents of each of the 830 cassette tapes included in the collection. There are also card files created by Gerrard to index roughly half of the recordings.
