The Grady family of Duplin County, N.C. and other locations within the United States included Theodosia Grady, Charles C. Grady, and H. A. Grady.

The collection is chiefly letters written in the 1880s and early 1900s to Theodosia Grady, of Duplin County, N.C., by H. A. Grady, her brother or brother-in-law, engaged in railroad construction and carpentry work in eastern North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Colorado; and scattered earlier receipts, deeds, and other items from Duplin County. Grady's letters describe his work, general life, and local conditions in the places he worked.
