Abstract	In 1815, Bryan Grimes (1793-1860) of Pitt County, N.C., married Nancy Grist. Three of their children reached maturity: Susan, William (1823-1884), and Bryan Grimes Jr. (1828-1880). The elder Grimes gave his two sons plantations along the Tar River. The brothers prospered as slave owners, cotton growers, and real estate investors. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Bryan became a major in the 4th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He rose to the rank of major general. William remained in North Carolina. After the conflict, Bryan returned to his plantation Grimesland. William resided in Raleigh, where he became an absentee landlord in the tenant farming system, cattle breeder, and hotel owner. In 1880, Bryan became embroiled in a feud with the Paramore brothers and was killed by their hired assassin. William died four years later. The collection includes correspondence, financial and legal items, military papers, estate papers, account books, genealogical material, and other items relating to the Grimes family of North Carolina and the related Hanraham, Kennedy, and Singeltary families, chiefly 1830-1880. Among the topics documented are daily routines, the Civil War both in the military arena and on the home front, education at the University of North Carolina and other institutions, plantation management, slavery, sharecropping, livestock breeding, and cotton growing. Some materials relate to the buying and selling of slaves, and there are a few post-Civil War letters from ex-slaves. Besides members of the principal families, people important in the collection include Asa Biggs, John Gray Blount, William Boyd, William Cherry, Pulaski Cowper, James R. Hoyle, W.W. Meyers, James O'K Williams, and Charles Clements Yellowley. Significant locations include Beaufort County, Hyde County, Pitt County, and Raleigh (including information about the Exchange Hotel and the Yarborough House, both owned by family members), all in North Carolina, and Charleston, S.C.

On 24 June 1760, Demsie Grimes married Penelope Coffield of Bertie County, N.C. The couple eventually settled on "Avon" Plantation (Farms) in Pitt County, N.C. Demsie Grimes was active in supporting the Continental Congress and his son, William, served as a soldier. William Grimes (1766-1797), Demsie's eldest son, married Anne Bryan (d. 1828) after the war. The pair had two children that reached adulthood. They were Sarah and Bryan.

In 1813, Bryan Grimes (1793-1860) attended the University of North Carolina. Two years later he married Nancy Grist. Three of their children reached maturity: Susan, William (1823-1884), and Bryan Grimes Jr. (1828-1880). Susan married Dr. John G. Myers and lived in Washington, N.C. William attended the University of North Carolina and graduated from Princeton College, N.J. He later married Elizabeth Hanrahan. Bryan Jr. graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1841; a decade later, he married Elizabeth Hilliard Davis, and, after her death, he married Charlotte Emily Bryan in 1863.

Following the death of his first wife, Bryan Grimes Sr. married Lucy Olivia Blount, with whom he had six more children. Grimes's only son from this marriage, John Gray Blount Grimes (1834-1909), married Helen Manly. Helen Manly Grimes was the daughter of Governor Charles Manly (1795-1891) of North Carolina. During the Civil War, J.G.B. Grimes served in the same regiment as Bryan Grimes Jr.

Throughout his adult life, Bryan Grimes Sr. managed his business and family affairs in eastern North Carolina. These matters included the buying and selling of land and slaves, various banking transactions, concerns for local transportation routes, and developing his plantations. Grimes did show some interest in politics, but spent the majority of his time as a planter.

Bryan Grimes Sr. also frequently served as an executor or guardian for his relatives. Estates involved included those of John Singeltary, John Kennedy, Thomas and Walter Hanrahan, William Boyd, William Cherry, James O'K. Williams, and James R. Hoyle. Through Grimes's supervision the children of these men were clothed, fed, and educated, their lands were managed, and their slaves contracted out to other planters on an annual basis.

The two sons from Bryan Grimes Sr.'s first marriage followed lifestyles similar to their father's. Both men were planters, neither demonstrated a great interest in political or military affairs before the Civil War, and both had large families of their own. William Grimes lived in Raleigh and received his income from Yankee Hall, another family plantation on the Tar River in Pitt County. Bryan Grimes Jr. resided at Grimesland, also in Pitt County. Yankee Hall and Grimesland were gifts to his sons from Bryan Grimes Sr. before his death in 1860.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Bryan Grimes Jr. became major of the 4th North Carolina Infantry. He earned the reputation of a fierce fighter and rose to the rank of major general before the close of the war. William remained in Raleigh during the war.

After the war, the Grimes family continued their agricultural and business activities in North Carolina. The overseers on the plantations resumed the growing of cotton, along with corn and peas. William was involved also with animal husbandry and owned two Raleigh hotels, the Yarborough House and the Exchange Hotel. Bryan returned to Grimesland, and, in 1877, became a trustee of the University of North Carolina. In 1880, he became embroiled in a feud with the Paramore Brothers and was killed by their hired assassin.

William Grimes continued to live in Raleigh. He died in 1884, leaving a widow and five children. His male children and wife, Elizabeth, took over the family businesses after his death. The donors of these papers are descended from William Grimes.

Letters from Major General Bryan Grimes Jr. chiefly to his brother, William. The content covers family business matters, camp life, enemy movements, events involving the 4th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Grimes's rise through the ranks, and battle results. Grimes was mainly with his regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia in the Virginia theater.

Notable topics include camp life following the first battle of Bull Run, events during the Peninsula Campaign, the healing of battle wounds, the two major offensives outside of Virginia, politics within the brigade and division, and the siege of Petersburg.

Mostly weekly reports to William Grimes from the overseer of Avon Plantation (Farms) in Pitt County, N.C. The reports cover routine operations, conditions and problems with white and black farm hands, and purchase and sale of livestock. Problems include illnesses, poor weather, and transportation. The plantation produced mostly cotton, but also grew peas and corn. Other items of note are a group of letters from Oregon Farms, and mentions of Yankee Hall, animal husbandry, and General Bryan Grimes Jr.

Correspondence to and from various members of the Grimes family. Many letters concern family businesses and the managing of estate property by Bryan Grimes Sr. Financial correspondence includes discussions of shipping, purchases, loans, cotton, real estate, bankruptcy, animal husbandry, and employment. Notable correspondents and persons mentioned include Asa Biggs (1811-1878), Thomas Ruffin (1787-1870), Charles Courtenay Tew (1827-1862), Kemp P. Battle (1831-1919), Pulaski Cowper (1832-1901), and William Grimes's attorney, Charles Clements Yellowley (1821-1885). Colonel Yellowley commanded the 8th North Carolina State Troops.

Business transactions discussed were chiefly concentrated in Raleigh and the coastal plain of North Carolina. However, also included are letters from cotton factors in Norfolk, Baltimore, and New York. Noteworthy military items of the Civil War era include notes to Colonel Bryan Grimes Jr. and letters from Alonzo H. Mansfield, a relative of the Grimes family. Mansfield attended the Hillsboro Military Academy, later fought in the war, and also served in the 8th North Carolina State Troops.

Most of these letters were written to William Grimes; almost all of the rest were written to Bryan Grimes or other members of the Grimes family.

Bills and receipts from the estate of John Singeltary as controlled by Bryan Grimes Sr. John Singeltary's children were George, Thomas, and Richard Singeltary. George Badger Singeltary (d. 1862) married Cora Manly. He served as commander of the 44th North Carolina Regiment and was killed in action at Tranter's Creek, N.C. Thomas Chappeau Singeltary (1840-1873), a graduate of the University of North Carolina, replaced his brother as colonel of the unit.

Chiefly correspondence between various members of the Grimes family and their associates. Also included is a small amount of scattered financial materials, clippings, printed materials, and other items. Correspondence largely relates to the daily lives of Grimes family members and their associates, the Civil War, and financial matters. In several letters, Bryan Grimes Jr. wrote to his brother William Grimes describing his experiences serving in the Confederate Army. Later letters from several correspondents reflect the social and financial changes brought about by the Civil War; included are a few letters from former Grimes family slaves. Also included are materials relating to education, among them letters to William Grimes and Elizabeth (Bettie) Grimes from their respective fathers written while they were away at school; school and university programs; and other printed materials.

Folder 413 Letters from Bryan Grimes Sr. to his son William Grimes, written while William Grimes was first preparing to enter and then studying at at Princeton University (then the College of New Jersey). In several letters, Bryan Grimes wrote enouraging William to enroll at the University of North Carolina instead and, in another letter, Bryan Grimes described the University of North Carolina's 1842 commencement ceremonies.

Correspondents include William Grimes, Bryan Grimes, Thomas Hanrahan, Pulaski Cowper, Thomas C. Singeltary, and E.M. Blount.

Folder 416 Letters discussing the Civil War; chiefly letters from Bryan Grimes Jr. to his brother William Grimes, discussing Bryan's service as a major general with the 4th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. In the first three letters, Bryan Grimes Jr. wrote to William Grimes from Camp Hill, N.C., near Garysburg and Weldon, describing his adjustment to the military and camp life and requesting equipment, clothing, and other supplies. In two later letters, Bryan Grimes Jr. wrote from camps near Manassas, Va., describing his duties, fellow officers (including General Beauregard), troop movements, and the aftermath of the Battle of Manassas, including the lack of necessary supplies and the disposition of dead soldiers. Other correspondents include A. Mansfield and Bryan Grimes Jr.'s stepbrother, John Gray Blount Grimes.
Folder 417	Grimes family correspondence, 1865-1869 #03357, Series: "Addition of August 2011 (Acc. 101475), 1839-1947." Folder 417 Letters to and from William Grimes. In one letter, William Grimes wrote to William C. Blount refusing to accept devalued Confederate currency as payment for a debt that had originally been paid in United States currency. In another, a former Union colonel named Letcher thanked William Grimes for his actions during a wartime dispute in which Letcher had entered Grimes's home. Filed with the letter is an undated statement by William Grimes describing the encounter. Also included is a letter to William Grimes from a former slave, also named William Grimes, who had become a Methodist circuit preacher. Other correspondents include B. Rodman and an unidentified correspondent.

Folder 418 Letters to and from William Grimes relating to financial, legal, and philanthropic matters. Included is a letter from a former slave named Phyllis to William Grimes asking to visit and obtain employment. Also included is a letter from Kemp Battle dated May 1875 seeking subscription donations to re-open the University of North Carolina following its closure after the Civil War. Correspondents include G.W. Brooks, N. Collin Hughes, M.S. Delaney, and Bryan Grimes.
