The collection includes two brief essays relating to early settlers around what became Asheville, N.C.; information about members of the Gudger, Love, Baird, and Smith families of western North Carolina, including Bacchus J. Smith (1804-1886), C. Drayton Smith (1813-1894), and Zebulon Baird Vance (1830-1894); and a letter, 14 December 1879, from Z. B. Vance to his aunt, M. A. Baird of Asheville.
