• EDWARD OWINGS GUERRANT PAPERS (#2826) JOHN W. GUERRANT PAPERS (Duke University #2229)

Peter D. Guerrant, fl. 1833-1868, a Methodist preacher who lived, at least in 1868, in Leaksville, Rockingham County, N.C. Leaksville was later incorporated into the town of Eden.

Records at the Commission on Archives and History of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church list Guerrant as having been a leader of the Guilford congregation in 1833 and a local preacher at the Mount Carmel church in Rockingham County, 1834 through 1836. "Local preachers" did not received yearly appointments to circuits from a bishop, but might preach at various churches over a period of time.

It is possible that Guerrant was related to Edward Owings Guerrant, 1838-1916, a Presbyterian minister and evangelist from Sharpsburg, Kentucky. Peter D. Guerrant certainly was related to John W. Guerrant, 1803-1868, a general merchant who operated a flour mill, a sawmill, and other ventures in and around Pittsylvania County, Virginia. John W. Guerrant is listed in Peter D. Guerrant's account book, as are other Guerrants who also appear in the papers of John W. Guerrant (Duke University #2229).

Four routine letters, twelve full or partial sermons, and an account book of Peter D. Guerrant, Methodist preacher of Leaksville (now Eden), Rockingham County, N.C. Guerrant seems to have been related to the Guerrant family of Virginia and possibly to the Guerrant family of Kentucky.
