educational historian, primarily while at Peabody
College in Nashville, Tenn., and his colleagues,
including former graduate students, his friend and
collaborator, Edgar Wallace Knight (1885-1953),
educational historian at the University of North
Carolina, and his friend, J. Isaac Copeland. Letters
concern books, articles, and ideas in education; joint
editorial work; and Hall's graduate study at the
University of North Carolina and his professional
plans.

INTRODUCTION
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Clifton Landon Hall was born 28 October 1898 in Cowansville,
Quebec. He received his bachelor's degree, with honors, from
Bishop's University, where he majored in French and Latin. He
received Master of Arts degrees from McGill University and from
Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1949, he received a
Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of education from the
University of North Carolina.
Hall served as a teacher and administrator in Quebec schools,
as an investigator in the Canadian Army during World War II, and
as a lecturer at UNC prior to 1949, when he began teaching
education at Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee. Beginning in
1956, he spent a year as a visiting professor at the University
of Manchester, England. He left Peabody in 1967. He was a
visiting professor at Vanderbilt University and then at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville, until his retirement in 1969.
During his career as an educator, he wrote numerous articles for
educational journals.
Hall died in 1987.
COLLECTION OVERVIEW
This collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Hall
and his colleagues, including a number of former graduate
students at Peabody. Correspondence relates to professional
activities as well as to personal concerns.
Hall arranged most of his correspondence alphabetically by
correspondent. This arrangement has been retained.
The remainder of the collection consists of copies of Hall's
writings, journals and other volumes, and other items.
