| Abstract | James Hamilton was a nullification governor of South Carolina and a diplomat of the Texas Republic. The collection consists of materials gathered by J.G. de Roulhac Hamilton, historian, in contemplation of a biography of Hamilton. Included are 50 original 19th-century manuscripts of Hamilton, mostly letters written by him; 30 manuscripts of his sons in Texas and the Confederate Army; many copies of Hamilton manuscripts in other repositories; notes, correspondence, and unpublished writings of J.G. de Roulhac Hamilton about James Hamilton; and microfilm copies of Hamilton family letters and writings of Samuel Prioleau Hamilton about his father, James. Series 4. Pictures.
Photographs include portraits of James Hamilton Sr., Mrs. James Hamilton Jr., an unidentified woman, and several portraits of Caleb Cushing, former United States Congressman from Massachusetts and Attorney General under Franklin Pierce. Also included are several photographs of James Hamilton Jr.'s Charleston, S.C. home and one of Cushing's home in Newburyport, Mass. The folder also contains a page on which there are drawn five illustrated panels depicting women performing heroic actions, captioned "Heroic Women of the Revolution."
