Biographical
Information
James Gordon Hanes (1916-1995) was a Winston-Salem manufacturer and North Carolina state senator. Hanes served two terms, 1963-1966, and was a member of the Commission to Study the Statutes Relating to Visiting Speakers at State Supported Educational Institutions (Speaker Ban Study Commission). The commission was created by the General Assembly of North Carolina, June 1965, at the request of Governor Dan K. Moore, and the commissioners were appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor, and speaker of the house. David M. Britt was chairman of the nine-member study group. The members met together and also worked separately on the study; the comission held public hearings in August and September 1965 in Raleigh, N.C., and submitted a report to the governor in November 1965. As a result, the governor called for a special session of the legislature that amended the act of 26 June 1963 (H. B. 1395), officially titled "An Act to Regulate Visiting Speakers at State Supported Colleges and Universities" but referred to as the Speaker Ban.
