John McLean Harrington (1839-1887) was a teacher, surveyor, clerk, and onetime sheriff of Harnett County, N.C.

The collection includes five handwritten issues of periodicals titled "The Nation," "The Young American," and "The Leasure Hour," possibly drafts for publication, containing essays, verse, and miscellany, written in 1858 by John McLean Harrington at Buffalo Springs, Harnett County, N.C., and in 1869 by Sion Harrington at Harrington, Harnett County, N.C.
