The collection includes military orders and communications, 1861-1862, chiefly directed to Captain John Robert Hawes of Company E of the 8th North Carolina Regiment, Confederate States of America, in New Hanover County, and its service at Wilmington, N.C. The communications relate to organization of area troops, mustering of the companies, and the arrangements for feeding, arming, and drilling the soldiers.
