John Hawks (1731-1790) of North Carolina was an accountant and architect, best known as the designer of Tryon Palace, New Bern, N.C.

The collection contains scattered drawings, correspondence, and other papers relating to buildings in Edenton, N.C., including a subscription list, 1767, for the building of a courthouse and prison; drawing of the cupola for a church, 1769; drawings for a prison, 1773; and a letter, 1857, from Robert Treat Paine concerning the transfer of these papers to the North Carolina Historical Society. Also included are architectural sketches, undated, of a church in Hillsborough, N.C., thought to be the work of John Hawks.
