Abstract John Hill operated a plantation, apparently in the Edgefield District, in South Carolina. He commanded the Springfield Beat Company of the South Carolina militia in the Edgefield District. The collection is a plantation journal, January-September 1830, kept by John Hill, presumably in Edgefield District, S.C., including references to slaves; accounts for medical services to slaves rendered by Hill in 1835; and records of the Springfield Beat Company of the South Carolina militia, kept by Colonel John Hill, Edgefield District, S.C., 1836-1843.

One volume containing a plantation journal, 1830; accounts for medical services to slaves, 1835; and records of the Springfield Beat Company of the South Carolina militia, kept by Colonel John Hill, Edgefield District, S.C., 1836-1843. The plantation journal, 1830, contains records of daily activities of John Hill and workers on his plantation constructing farm buildings and caring for animals, tools, and crops, which included cotton, corn, and oats. Accounts, 1835, are for medical services to slaves rendered by John Hill, including medicines supplied. The records of the Springfield Beat, 1836-1843, include rolls, orders, and records of drills, elections, courts-martial, fines, and expenditures.
