Whitmel Hill (1743-1797) of Bertie County, N.C., was a planter, merchant, state legislator, and perhaps a member of the Continental Congress. He was prominent in early Revolutionary movements and served as a colonel in the Revolutionary War. He married Winifred Blount of Edenton, N.C., and owned property in Bertie, Martin, and Halifax counties, N.C.

The collection includes an unsigned letter, circa 1795, presumably from Whitmel Hill to "House of Representatives of the United States," arguing against the expediency of war with Great Britain; a contemporary manuscript copy of Hill's will, 1 September 1798, itemizing his property; and a newspaper clipping concerning Whitmel Hill, 1935.
