expand/collapse Expand/collapse Collection Overview

Size 5.0 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 1700 items items)
Abstract Members of the Holloway and Sorrell family were from of Leesville, Wake County, N.C. The collection consists of family papers, correspondence, genealogical notes, and pictures relating to the Holloway and Sorrell family of Leesville, Wake County, N.C. Much of the collection consists of genealogical correspondence and notes, dating from the 1960s to the 1990s, relating to Frances Holloway Wynne's efforts to compile a history of the Holloway and Sorrell family, as well as a collection of about 600 pictures of various family members. In addition, there is a smaller collection of family papers, apparently collected by Frances Holloway Wynne while doing genealogical research. Early papers are chiefly deeds and indentures relating to purchases and sales of property of members of the family. In the 1860s, there are a few letters about military life from family members fighting with Confederate forces. Materials in the 1870s through the 1900s consist of a few scattered family letters and financial items. In the 1900s and 1910s, several items relate to Lydia Sorrell, first as a student at Leesville High School and, for a short time, at Peace Institute in Raleigh, and later as an applicant for a position with the United States Post Office. Genealogical correspondence and notes include materials about the Holloway and Sorrell family, as well as related families, including the Bledsoe, Brightwell, Cheshire, Cooke, Cooper, Dillard, Nipper, Ward, and Williams families, most of which were either resident or had strong ties to North Carolina. Some letters discuss activities of family members scattered around the United States, but most are chiefly concerned with family history. Some materials relate to the study of genealogy, and some display a particular interest in African-American genealogical studies in North Carolina. Included are the bylaws and constitution of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. Pictures, many of which were annotated by Frances Holloway Wynne, show various family members, covering approximately four generations.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Biographical Information

The earliest Sorrell family member documented in the United States appears to have been Edward Sorrell, who was born in Virginia around 1740, although it may be that the Sorrells have lived in the United States since before 1700. The earliest mention of a Holloway family member appears to date back to George Holloway, who died in 1759 in Lunenburg County, Va. In the succeeding years, most Holloway and Sorrell family members lived in or around Wake County, N.C., where they were among the more prominent landowners of the region. The Holloway and Sorrell families were linked when Joseph Turner Holloway married Eva Estille Sorrell on 15 August 1893.

Frances Holloway Wynne, granddaughter of Joseph Turner Holloway and Eva Estille Sorrell Holloway, received an A.B. in English from Duke University, and spent 34 years teaching in the Fairfax County, Va., public school system. She became interested in genealogy in 1969 and was active in the North Carolina Genealogical Society, Tidewater Genealogical Society, and the National Genealogical Society, among others. She published a number of genealogical abstracts and registers dealing with Wake County, N.C., Durham County, N.C., and African Americans in Brunswick County, Va.
