George Frederick Holmes (1820-1897) was an author and educator. Holmes was born in British Guiana, emigrating to the United States in 1838. He was the first president of the University of Mississippi, 1848-1849; taught at other southern colleges; and was professor of history and political economy and science of society at the University of Virginia, 1857-1897.

The collection includes a letter from George Frederick Holmes to Alexander Brown, Nelson County, Va., discussing the Native American ancestry of the Davis family of Virginia and its Floyd, Venable, Powell, Robertson, Marye, and Brown relations.
