Andrew Atkinson Humphreys (1810-1883) of Pennsylvania was chief of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, 1866-1879. He was educated at the United States Military Academy and began his military service in 1831.

The collection includes papers of A. A. Humphreys, consisting primarily of letters of introduction but including two letters, 1872, from Jefferson Davis concerning their work together on the surveys for the transcontinental Northern Pacific Railroad when Davis was United States Secretary of War. Other correspondents include Joseph E. Johnston, James Buchanan, and James Longstreet.
