The Order of Good Templars was founded in New York in 1851. In 1852, the name was changed to Independent Order of Good Templars, and, in 1903, to the International Order of Good Templars (IOGT). This fraternal organization accepted both men and women as members and was devoted to temperance. Thomasville Lodge No.11 was founded in 1872 in Thomasville, N.C. Worthy Chief Templars, or leaders of the lodge, included the Reverend C. M. Pepper and John D. Paylor.

The collection is the minute book of the Independent Order of Good Templars, Thomasville Lodge No. 11, Thomasville, N.C., containing minutes from weekly meetings beginning with the Lodge's first meeting on 1 November 1872 and continuing until 30 July 1874. Included are lists of officers and members, notes on temperance and cases brought before the Order involving members and alcohol-related activities, and notes on petitions aimed at prohibiting the sale of alcohol.
