| Abstract | T. D. (Thomas Dillard) Johnston (1840-1902) was a lawyer and businessman of Asheville, N.C. Johnston held various political offices, including mayor of Asheville, 1868; state representative, 1870-1874; state senator, 1876; and United States representative, 1885-1889. The papers of T. D. Johnston consist chiefly of political and business correspondence in the 1870s when he was a leading Democratic member of the North Carolina legislature. Also included are Johnston's notes on the law lectures of Richmond Mumford Pearson; antebellum papers of his father, William Johnston of Waynesville in Haywood County, N.C., including a book of poems written to members of the family (on microfilm); minutes of the Spartanburg, S.C., Methodist Sunday School Relief Society, 1861-1863; a scrapbook, 1862-1864; and a typed copy of the Dillard family history. The collection does not relate to T. D. Johnston's career as a United States representative, 1885-1889. |

Thomas Dillard Johnston (1840-1902) was a lawyer and businessman of Asheville, N.C. Johnston held various political offices, including mayor of Asheville, 1868; state representative, 1870-1874; state senator, 1876; and United States representative, 1885-1889. Johnston was born in Waynesville, N.C. and was educated at Colonel Stephen D. Lee's school and the University of North Carolina, 1858-1859.

Scope and Content
The papers of T.D. Johnston consist chiefly of political and business correspondence in the 1870s when he was a leading Democratic member of the North Carolina legislature. Also included are Johnston's notes on the law lectures of Richmond Mumford Pearson; antebellum papers of his father, William Johnston of Waynesville in Haywood County, N.C., including a book of poems written to members of the family (on microfilm); minutes of the Spartanburg, S.C., Methodist Sunday School Relief Society, 1861-1863; a scrapbook, 1862-1864; and a typed copy of the Dillard family history. Also include are the papers, 1880s and 1890s, of Annie Johnston, who married William Trotter Weaver of Asheville, N.C., in 1887. The collection does not relate to T. D. Johnston's career as a United States representative, 1885-1889.
