Abstract George Washington Jones, a native of Tennessee, was Democratic state representative, 1835-1839, and state senator, 1839-1841; clerk of the Lincoln County Court, 1840-1843; United States representative, 1843-1859; Confederate congressman, 1862-1864; and member of the Tennessee Constitutional Convention of 1870. The collection includes letters received by Jones from prominent politicians, chiefly in the 1840s and 1870s, including political correspondence, papers pertaining to Tennessee politics and national issues, and a few receipts and other financial documents. Aaron Venable Brown (1795-1859) was a frequent correspondent. Items of interest include an extract from a letter, 20 August 1859, from Howell Cobb of Georgia, opposing the re-opening of the slave trade and government interference in the expansion of slavery into the territories, and a series of letters, 1877-1878, concerning a speech by Jones presented at the unveiling of a statue of Andrew Johnson. There are no papers for the period 1850-1858 or pertaining to the Confederate Congress or the Tennessee state convention of 1870.
