M. H. Jones was a lumber merchant of New Bern, N.C. His wife Eula's father J. J. Bagwell owned a tobacco farm in Garner, Wake County, N.C. Children of M. H. and Eula included Dorothy and Whitmel; Eula's sister Flossie married Needham L. Broughton.

Chiefly letters relating to the settlement of J. J. Bagwell's estate, to the management and sale of property in Garner and elsewhere in the state, and to Jones's lumber business. Letters relating to the estate settlement include those between M. H. and Eula and between Eula and Flossie and Needham, all aimed at working out problems arising from dividing property and assets among Bagwell's survivors. Property management and sale letters relate chiefly to growing tobacco in Garner and to selling the old home place. Lumber business materials document Jones's trade with dealers in Philadelphia, Mississippi, and other locations; some letters show that Whitmel Jones was also involved in the business. Most letters record routine business affairs, but there is a series of letters in mid-1934 that relate to a mild dispute about lumber price-code violations.
