| Abstract | Paul Jones was born in Hickory, N.C., on 5 February 1950. He received his M.F.A in poetry from Warren Wilson College in 1993. Since high school, Jones has followed a dual career path in computers and poetry. From 1977 to 1996, Jones worked for the Office of Information Technology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1992, he was instrumental in creating SunSITE, a major Internet server and digital library. One of Jones's special interests has been establishing the Internet Poetry Archive. In 1996, Jones moved to the University of Virginia. Jones was director of the Poets Exchange at the ArtSchool in Carrboro, N.C.; on the founding board for the North Carolina Writers' Network; and, in 1990, Jones won the Harperprints Poetry Chapbook competition award from the North Carolina Writers' Network for his chapbook What the Welsh and Chinese Have in Common. The collection contains correspondence and related materials, ca. 1980-1994, including letters to and from poets and other literary figures. Some of the letters include copies of correspondents' writings. Writings by Jones are chiefly poems, including several drafts of What the Welsh and Chinese Have In Common. Also included are a few essays, some written for graduate school classes at Warren Wilson College. There are also letters and writings of others who were Jones's classmates at Warren Wilson. ArtSchool materials relate to Jones's position as director of the Poetry Exchange. These include newspaper articles, publicity posters, and correspondence from poets who participated in ArtSchool readings over the course of Jones's tenure and audio tapes of poetry readings. North Carolina Writers' Network materials deal with the founding of the Network and Jones's tenure as president. SunSITE materials include items relating to the introduction of SunSITE and to the Internet Poetry Archive. Series 1. Correspondence and Related Materials, ca. 1980-1994.
Arrangement: alphabetical.
Jones's general correspondence, chiefly with poets and other literary figures. Included is significant correspondence with poets Edison Dupree and Rohn Parsons. Original writings are enclosed with letters from other writers, including Michael McFee, Paul Muldoon, Shelby Stephenson, and Jeffery Beam. See also correspondence in Series 2 regarding Jones's chapbook "What the Welsh and Chinese Have in Common" and in Series 3 from other students in the M.F.A. program at Warren Wilson College.

Series 2. Writings.
Chiefly poetry, including several drafts of his award-winning chapbook "What the Welsh and Chinese Have In Common." Materials relating to the chapbook include congratulatory correspondence, clippings, reading notices, and items relating to marketing efforts by the Writers' Network. In addition to the poems, there are also an essay about Raymond Carver that serves as a headnote to a Carver story in The Heath Anthology of American Literature and an essay on Yeats, written for a graduate school class at UNC-CH. Series 3. Master of Fine Arts Materials, 1991-1993.
Correspondence with members of his class at Warren Wilson College and some of their poetry manuscripts. Materials from workshop classes that were taught while the students were in residency are included. These include both photocopies of class handouts and collections of students' poetry. Jones's course work includes several revisions, poems annotated by his instructors, and essays written as class assignments.

Series 4. ArtSchool/North Carolina Writers' Network, ca. 1978-1989.
Materials relating to Jones's position as director of the Poetry Exchange at the ArtSchool (now called ArtCenter) in Carrboro, N.C., a position he held for about ten years. Poetry reading folders contain newspaper articles, publicity posters, and correspondence from poets who participated in ArtSchool readings over the course of Jones's tenure. Also included are audio tapes of poetry readings from the Poets' Exchange. North Carolina Writers' Network materials deal with the founding of the Network and Jones's tenure as president.

Materials concerning SunSITE and the Internet Poetry Archive. Included are newspaper clippings and magazine articles documenting SunSITE's introduction. Some correspondence and video tapes relating to Jones's Internet activities are also included.

Series 6. Other Papers, ca. 1979-1995.
Poetry written by members of the Black Socks Poetry Group, who included Jones, Coyla Berry, Grey Craven, Mike Chitwood, Debra Kaufman, Cedar Koons, Deborah Pope, Laura Marsberg, Michael McFee, Cindy Parris, and Shirley Stipe Raines. Also included is material from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, held in Middlebury, Vt., which Jones attended in 1980. Poetry-related materials consist of several newspaper clippings, conference brochures, and other items.
