| Abstract | Sergeant James H. Kelly, who may have been from New York, served in the United States Army Signal Corps from 1861 to 1866. The collection consists of a ten-page manuscript in which James H. Kelly described his service in the United States Signal Corps in 1862, including his account of the Battle of Shiloh, his time spent traveling along the Mississippi and White rivers, and campaigns of which he was a part; his certificate declaring him a sergeant, 1864, signed by William J.L. Nicodemus; Kelly's statement to the pension bureau; a letter written aboard the steamer White Cloud to his brother Ralph and sister Jane that details an attack on the boat in July 1862; and five pins and one medal recognizing his service during the Civil War. |
