Abstract: Twenty-three looseleaf notebooks and six boxes of
notecards resulting from the research of Charles
Kerby-Miller (d. 1971), professor at Wellesley
College, on publishing in Great Britain. Included is
information on publishing and printing of newspapers
and other periodicals and freedom of the press in
Great Britain, 1630-1735.

symbols; short title list of periodicals;
miscellaneous material about authors, publishers,
apprentices; perpetual calendar; Elizabeth
Carmichael material; case of Robert Walker and
Mary Baker; passages from trials of Curll,
Wilkins, Francklin, Mists, etc.
Folder 2-3 Volume 2, Parts 1-2: Undated, 430 pp. List of
printers and publishers (about 495 names) in two
volumes (continued on notecards).
Folder 4-9 Volume 3, Parts 1-6: 1695-1730, 630 pp. Six
volumes with notes on periodicals (continued on
notecards).
Folder 10 Volume 4: 1680-1747, 200 pp. Prosecution book
covering in chronological order the government's
efforts to control the press compiled primarily
from the Publics Records Office. The volume is
indexed is by proper names and periodicals.
Included are 1,300 entries relating to
investigations, examinations, court actions and
sentences. Also included is some Elizabeth
Carmichael material.
Folder 11 Volume 5: Undated, 50 pp. General index of the
list section (XXV) of the Organization Chart,
almanacs, Nichols Illus. index of people, Bowyer
contributions, the Negus list, tax list, etc.
Folder 12 Volume 6: Undated, 100 pp. Stationer's Hall Book
("Helen's book") with the report of Elizabeth
Carmichael; material from City Records Office;
survey of vault room where records were kept;
notes on shifts and changes in livery, 1682-1710,
and livery polls for 1701, 1710, 1722, and 1733;
and a list of books and pamphlets in the
Stationer's Register before and after the
Copyright Law.
