Information
Walter Winbourne King (1846-1913), was a lawyer and politician of Danbury, Stokes County, N.C. King was born at King's Cross Roads, Guilford County, N.C. He enlisted in the Confederate Army, 1864, and served with the North Carolina Junior Reserves. After the war, he practiced law and was elected to the state legislature. He was married to Cornelia McCanless.
Robert Roy King (1879-1964), an engineer, was the son of Walter Winborne King and Cornelia McCanless King. He was married to Pearl Fanchon Hensley (1887-1968) with whom he had seven children: Woodrow (died 1917); Walter (1911-1947), who served as a junior engineer in the United States Merchant Marine and died in Genoa, Italy; Clifford Hensley (1913-1945), an army engineer killed on the Stilwell Road in Burma; Robert L.; Roy Stedman (born 1923); Sarah King Wall; and Nell King German.

The collection includes material relating to Walter Winbourne King, his son, Robert Roy King (1879-1964), and other family members. Most of the correspondence pertains to W. W. King's legal practice. Series 1. Correspondence, 1864-1950.
Most of the correspondence, 1864-1913, concerns the business activities of Walter Winbourne King as an attorney in Danbury, N.C. It includes letters from various clients regarding land cases, estate settlements, and debt cases King handled for them. Also included are letters seeking King's support, from candidates for local office, and letters of support for King in his bid for a local judgeship in 1902. Correspondents include William W. Kitchin, Judge Walter Clark, and John Shaw. Some family letters are also included, as is material, including members lists, regarding the United Confederate Veterans, Stokes County Camp. Items, 1917-1950, consist mostly of family correspondence of R. R. and Pearl King and their children and letters to R. R. and Pearl from their grandchildren. Included are letters and postcards from Walter King in the West Indies, South America, and Europe, and letters from Clifford King in Iran and Burma.

Series 3. Legal Documents, 1811-1962.
Includes deeds, indentures, affidavits, surveys, and quit claim deeds. These items pertain to cases involving transfer of land, disputes over boundaries, and land sales handled by Walter Winbourne King.

Series 4. Other Papers and Photographs, 1918-1960.
Other materials are certificates, which include an attorney's license for Walter Winbourne King and his appointments to conferences; military records of Roy Stedman King and Clifford Hensley King; a short history and bylaws of the Danbury Fine Arts Club, in which Pearl King was active; clippings, which include obituaries and wedding announcements; and miscellaneous poetry, ballots, business cards, circulars, maps, and photographs. Most of the photographs are of bridge building in Arkansas, Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Texas, circa 1905-1918.

Series 5. Volumes, 1874-1924.
Includes memorandum books of Walter Winbourne King containing information on his legal cases and lists of debts paid and owed. Other volumes are undated engineering notes of Robert Roy King and an account and payroll book of the El Paso Bridge Company for which King worked.
