Historical Information
Kramer Brothers Company of Elizabeth City, N.C., was a family operated lumber business incorporated in 1917. It owned and operated sawing and finishing facilities, timberlands, and related property at Elizabeth City. It was sold to L. R. Foreman and Sons in 1961. The first president was Allen K. Kramer (1861-1919). J. H. Kramer served as president from 1919 until 1934, and Frank K. Kramer was president from 1934 until liquidation.
Kramer Brothers Company was the fifth Kramer lumber company in succession. The first company, D. S. Kramer, was started by Daniel Steigerwalt Kramer (1834-1899), who came to Elizabeth City in 1871 from Watsontown, Pa., and established a shop and planing mill the same year. His company was succeeded by D. S. Kramer and Sons, Kramer Brothers, Kramer Brothers and Company, and finally Kramer Brothers Company in 1917.

Scope and Content
The collection includes business records of Kramer Brothers Company including minutes of directors' and stockholders' meetings, 1917-1961, financial information, a record of stockholders. There is also material pertaining to the company's incorporation, dissolution, and liquidation, as well as miscellaneous letters, notes, and memoranda.
