Franz Kunst worked for the Southern Folklife Collection in 1999-2000. He was program director of the radio station WXYC at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill from 1993 until 2002, at which time he moved to the San Francisco, Calif. area.

The collection is a group of posters collected by Franz Kunst following the closure of Roots Records in Carrboro, N.C. Included are posters advertising performances and recording releases by performers working in various genres of American vernacular music. Also included are posters advertising festivals and traveling tours that feature multiple artists.
