Biographical/Historical NoteGeorge T. Lathrop was the chair of the Town of Chapel Hill (N.C.) Transportation Board, 1974-1982. Afterwards, he became deputy director of the Charlotte (N.C.) Department of Transportation. Lathrop also worked as a consultant for Kimley-Horn Associates and John Hamburg and Associates, 1973-1982. Lathrop earned his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and taught at the University, 1966-1973. Back to TopCollection OverviewThe collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, reports, studies, research data, and other materials related to George T. Lathrop's work on transportation issues in the Triangle area of North Carolina, including Chapel Hill, N.C., Durham, N.C., and Raleigh, N.C. Most of the records relate to Lathrop's tenure as chair of the Town of Chapel Hill Transportation Board, 1974-1982. They reflect the functioning of the Transportation Board as an advisory group for the Chapel Hill Town Manager and Chapel Hill Town Council on matters related to public transit, traffic congestion, road construction, parking, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Included are meeting minutes and agendas for virtually every monthly meeting of the Transportation Board between 1975 and 1982. Many documents deal specifically with the Chapel Hill Community Transit system or the local bus system, while others are related to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including correspondence with the University about campus parking and bus service. Other materials deal with Lathrop's work outside of his role on the Chapel Hill Transportation Board. Included are items relating to the Chapel Hill Central Business District Study Group; the Joint Committee on Public Transportation; and the Triangle J Council of Governments, for which Lathrop worked as a consultant from John Hamburg and Associates. There are also class materials from a course Lathrop taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982; a collection of recommendations made to the Triangle Transit Authority concerning a regional transit plan for the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill area; a 1975 North Carolina legislative report discussing the Transportation Improvement Plan of Chapel Hill; and other items.
