Abstract Henry C. Lay was an Episcopal clergyman and bishop. The collection includes family and church-related correspondence, including
sermons, scrapbooks, writings, and diaries of H. C. Lay while an Episcopal priest in Virginia, 1846-1847; in Huntsville, Ala.,
1847-1859; missionary bishop of Arkansas during the Civil War; and missionary bishop of the Diocese of Easton, Md., 1869-1885.
The collection includes a journal of Episcopal acts for most of the years 1863-1885. Also, European travel diaries, 1866-1867
and 1878-1879. Lay preached to the Army of Tennessee at times during the Civil War.
