Joel Leftwich (1759-1846) was an army officer, state legislator, and justice of the peace, of Bedford County, Va.

The collection includes correspondence and other papers of Leftwich, including letters, 1812-1814, from him to his wife Nancy relating to War of 1812 military campaigns and conditions in camps in Virginia and Maryland; letters from members of his family, especially his nephew, Robert Leftwich, 1823-1828; a scrapbook containing a certificate for service in the Revolutionary War and commissions to the ranks of captain, brigadier general, and major general in the Virginia militia; letters from members of the Otey family; and newspaper clippings.
