| Abstract | The Lenoir family settled primarily in North Carolina and Tennessee. This collection consists largely of personal letters addressed to Albert Sobieski Lenoir (1803-1861) and Catharine Frieling Welcker (Lenoir) and to George Lewis Welcker (d. 1848), from their large family connection in North Carolina and Tennessee and from Welcker's friends in the army. There are also papers relating to Albert S. Lenoir's work as Federal issuing agent to the Cherokee Indians, and his business and planting interests, and to Welcker's army engineering work. The later papers are of the next generation. The seventeen volumes are farm records, commonplace books, and albums. |

Information
Albert Sobieski Lenoir (1803-1861) of Loudon County, Tenn., was one of the twelve children of William Ballard Lenoir (1775-1852), who moved from North Carolina to Tennessee in 1810. William B. Lenoir was one of seven children, and his father, General William Lenoir of North Carolina, was one of ten. Albert S. Lenoir married Catharine Frieling Welcker in 1837, and they had ten children. His brother-in-law, George Lewis Welcker, entered the United States Military Academy in in 1832, and died in 1848 having attained the rank of captain in the Corps of Engineers.

Scope and Content
