| Abstract | John F. Leonard (1843-1924) was a federal soldier in the 125th Illinois Regiment during the Civil War. The collection is chiefly Civil War letters from Leonard written while he was serving in Tennessee and Georgia, to his family and friends in Vermilion County, Ill., with some letters from them and other family members. Leonard's letters discuss camp life, troop movements, discontent among soldiers, conditions in army hospitals where he was a patient, and personal matters. Also included are war items including copies of his United States Army veteran's records. |
