| Abstract | Practice account books used by James M. Lilly of Montgomery County, N.C., while attending Baltimore Commercial College. The practice account books were used by Lilly when he attended Baltimore Commercial College, 1854-1855. Most of the letters were written by Lilly to his family while he was a Confederate soldier in Virginia. Also included are two letters written prior to the Civil War about Lilly's business dealings, two letters from Lilly's brother Julius, a letter to J. A. Baldwin about battles in Richmond, a letter informing the Lilly family of James Lilly's death near Petersburg, Va., in 1864, and transcripts of all the letters. |

This collection contains practice account books and letters of James M. Lilly (1841-1864) of Montgomery County, N.C. The nine practice account books were used by Lilly when he attended Baltimore Commercial College, 1854-1855. Also included is a "Balance Sheet, Phillips & Moore," which is filed in oversized papers.
Most of the letters were written by Lilly to his family while he was a Confederate soldier in Virginia. They describe camp life and battles. Also included are two letters written prior to the Civil War about Lilly's business dealings, two letters from Lilly's brother Julius, a letter to J. A. Baldwin about battles in Richmond, and a letter informing the Lilly family of James Lilly's death near Petersburg, Va., in 1864, and transcripts of all the letters.
