(Henry Mauger) London (1879-1939) was a lawyer, North Carolina legislator, trustee of the University of North Carolina, state legislative reference librarian, and secretary-treasurer of the North Carolina State Bar Association. The collection includes correspondence, a diary, 1896-1897, and family papers, relating to London's student days at University of North Carolina, 1896-1899; work at the United States Census Office, Washington, D.C., 1900-1902; engagement, 1906-1908, to Mamie (Mary) Elliot, whom he later married; and to London's professional activities. Also included are materials on politics in Chatham County, N.C., and on the career of London's father, Henry Armand London (1846-1918). |

Information
H. M. (Henry Mauger) London (1879-1939) was the son of Henry Armand London (1846-1918) and Bettie Jackson London (1853-1930) of Pittsboro, N.C. He was educated at the University of North Carolina and Columbian University (later George Washington University). London worked for the United States Census Bureau, 1900-1902; practiced law in Pittsboro, N.C., 1903-1913; was mayor of Pittsboro, 1903-1905; representative from Chatham County in the North Carolina House of Representatives, 1907; represented Chatham in the North Carolina Senate, 1911; was deputy collector of internal revenue in North Carolina, 1913-1919; and served as North Carolina's Legislative Librarian, 1919-1939. In addition, he was secretary of the Univesity of North Carolina Board of Trustees, 1921-1939; secretary of the State Bar Incorporated, 1933-1938; secretary-treasurer of the State Bar Association; and treasurer of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina.
London married Mary Elliot in November 1908. They had two children, Henry Mauger Junior (born 1910) and George Elliot (born 1912).

Scope and Content
The collection is chiefly family letters of H. M. (Henry Mauger) London, his father Henry Armand London, mother Bettie Jackson London, sister Sallie, brother John J., and brother Isaac. There are also a few letters from friends and associates of Henry Armand and Henry Mauger. And, prior to 1880, there are also miscellaneous papers and letters of the Lord, Hill, and Campbell families of North Carolina and a few letters from Henry Armand's parents, Henry Adolphus London and Sallie Margaret Lord London, and his sister Ann Mauger London. From 1837 to 1885 there are also scattered papers of William E. Boudinot, mostly concerning a dispute between Boudinot and William B. Giles over land in Brunswick County, N.C. After 1896, papers are chiefly correspondence of Henry Mauger London while a student at the University of North Carolina, 1896-1899; while working at the Census office in Washington, D.C., 1900-1902; during his engagement to Mary Elliot, 1906-1908; and while serving in various legislative capacities in North Carolina, as trustee of the University of North Carolina, and an offier of the state Bar Association and Episcopal Diocese.

Scrapbook of Henry Mauger London, containing chiefly newspaper clippings, circa 1866-1922. Included are clippings on student life at the University of North Carolina, baseball, education, the Confederacy and organizations for Confederate veterans, social affairs, religion, and politics. There are also a few poems and short humorous articles.
