| Abstract | The Long family of Alamance County, N.C., included John Long and Letitia R. Long and their sons John A. Long, Benjamin N. Long, and Jacob Long. The three sons served in the Confederate army and all were apparently killed in action by the end of 1862. The collection includes the correspondence of the Long family and contains chiefly letters written, 1861-1862, by John A. Long, Benjamin N. Long, and Jacob Long in Confederate camps in various places in Virginia, as well as Raleigh, N.C., and Frederick, Md., to their parents at home concerning food, clothes, health, drilling, preaching, and other matters. Among other letters is one, 1872, from a patient at "Insane Asylum, N.C." briefly describing her life there. Spelling is frequently colloquial. |
