Scope and Content
The collection includes family correspondence and business and legal papers of members of the Lutterloh family. Early papers are indentures, land grants, wills, etc., of the Lutterloh and related West families. Later correspondence mentions gold mining in California, 1850-1859, and conditions at the Confederate front, as well as post-war social and political conditions, 1866-1869, including the Civil Rights Bill. The collection includes the reminiscences of Eliza (Comerford) Lutterloh of her life in North Carolina. Many letters are from close relatives and friends in North Carolina, Louisiana, Texas, Mexico, and particularly Cedar Key, Fla. Papers also contain references to sugar and molasses and cotton crops, religious matters, and a yellow fever epidemic.
