Abstract
William de Berniere MacNider MacNider received an M. D. from the University of North Carolina in 1903. He was named Kenan Professor of Pharmacology at UNC in 1905 and Kenan Research Professor of Pharmacology in 1920. He served as Dean of the UNC Medical School from 1937 to 1940 and held numerous lecture and research appointments at universities and hospitals in the mid-Atlantic region.
The collection is chiefly correspondence, personal and professional, of William DeBerniere MacNider with friends, relatives, students, and colleagues, relating to his work and the research of others, medical organizations, the University of North Carolina, and local affairs in Chapel Hill, N.C. University of North Carolina materials include discussions of University consolidation, athletics, honorary degrees, faculty activities, the University library, and the medical and public health schools. Also included are manuscript volumes, lecture notes, and laboratory notebooks.

Biographical/Historical Note

William DeBerniere MacNider was born in Chapel Hill, N.C., 25 June 1881, the son of Virginius St. Clair and Sophia Beatty Mallett MacNider. In 1918, he married Sarah Foard, with whom he had a daughter, also named Sarah (Sallie) Foard.

MacNider received an M. D. from the University of North Carolina in 1903. He was named Kenan Professor of Pharmacology at UNC in 1905 and Kenan Research Professor of Pharmacology in 1920. He served as Dean of the UNC Medical School from 1937 to 1940 and held numerous lecture and research appointments at universities and hospitals in the mid-Atlantic region.

MacNider was an active member of many professional organizations and a frequent contributor to medical and biological journals. He died 31 May 1951.

Addition of June 1987, 1906-1933 and undated.

A journal articles, a does book, a letter, a short biography of Graham Lusk, a speech, and two notebooks relating to the medical career of William de Berniere MacNider. The article was written by MacNider, and the dose book and notebooks may have been used by MacNider as teaching aides. The letter, dated 1 April 1926, is to MacNider from A. B. Macallum. The speech may be by MacNider; it was delivered to the North Carolina Medical College in Charlotte, N.C., in 1906. The biography of Lusk has a note on the cover written by MacNider.
