Information
Newton A. McCully (1867-1951) was a vice-admiral in the United States Navy and a native of South Carolina. McCully was born in Anderson, S.C., and was educated at the United States Naval Academy. In the course of his naval career he served in the United States, Asia, and Europe and saw active duty in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. He was an attache with Russian forces during the Russo-Japanese War; served with the Intelligence Bureau, 1905-1906; and was naval attache for Russia, 1914-1917. He commanded the Patrol Squadron Court of France, 1917-1918; the United States Naval Forces in North Russia, 1918-1919; and was with the Peace Commission in Paris, France, in 1919. McCully was also a Special Agent for the State Department in South Russia, 1919-1920; a member of the General Board of the Navy; vice-admiral of the Scouting Fleet, 1923-1924; chief of a naval mission to Brazil, 1925-1927; and commanded the 6th Naval District Charleston, S.C. He retired from naval service in 1931.
