Abstract MICROFILM ONLY. Autobiography of George Willcox McIver, written for his family in about 1930 and revised in about 1940. McIver
was born at Carthage, N.C., 22 December 1858, son of educator Alexander McIver and Mary Ann Willcox McIver. The memoirs describe
his family and his marriage to Helen Howard Smedburg; his childhood at Davidson, Chapel Hill, Bingham School, and Greensboro,
N.C.; his education at the United States Military Academy, 1877-1882; his service in the United States Army, 1882-1922, including
service in the American west, Cuba, Alaska, the Philippines, Washington, D.C., at West Point, in the Santiago campaign in
the War of 1898, and as a brigadier general in the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I; and his life
in New England and in Washington, D.C., after his retirement from the army.
