Abstract
Miscellaneous school notebooks, including: class notes of Thomas Glaskins, a student at Hampden-Sydney College, Va., 1830-1831, on the lectures of college President Jonathan P. Cushing in chemistry, physics, and arithmetic; two volumes, 1838-1840, of Eliza Ann Orr, a student in Caswell County, N.C., including poems, arithmetic exercises, and sermon texts; an 1820 volume kept by Augustus Moore (1803-1851) of Edenton, N.C., of lectures by Denison Olmsted (1791-1859) at the University of North Carolina; four notebooks, 1920-1921, of Robert H. Wettach, a student at Harvard Law School; two student notebooks, one on geology and the other on Darwinism, of Harry Legare Watson (1876-1956), who was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1899 and went on to careers in law and journalism, chiefly in Greenwood, S.C.; and two ciphering books, one apparently used around 1829 by Sidney O'Briant at the Whitefield School in Person County, N.C., and the other apparently the work of James W. O'Briant. In addition to mathematical instructions, this volume also contains notes on family history, the weather, land purchases, and other information. The latest entry in this book is dated 1860.

Class notes of Thomas Glaskins, student at Hampden-Sydney College, Va., 1830-1831, on the lectures of Jonathan P. Cushing in chemistry, physics, and arithmetic. Cushing was president of the college. (Purchase, April 1957.)

Eliza Ann Orr commonplace book, 1838-1840
1838 commonplace book with poems either written by or copied by Eliza Ann Orr of Caswell County, N.C. Included is a list of pupils, Orr among them, of Ann Christerner Forbes for a three-month session beginning June 1838. The second volume contains 1838 arithmetic exercises and copies of sermon texts, showing preachers' names and dates preached, 1838-1840. (Transfer, 1958.)

Two student notebooks of Harry Legare Watson (1876-1956), who was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1899 and went on to careers in law and journalism, chiefly in Greenwood, S.C.
V-3286/10. Notebook entitled "Geology 2," spring 1899, containing class notes in geology, a few pages of notes for English 4, and a short list of Watson's friends among members of the UNC class of 1901.
V-3286/11. Notebook entitled "Excursions of an Evolutionist," [1899], containing notes outlining Darwinian theory and also discussing the relationship between evolution and religion.

V-328612. Ciphering book, apparently used by Sidney O'Briant, at the Whitefield School in Person County, N.C. Of the few dated entries, the earliest is from 1829. Also included is a newspaper clipping about the Whitefield School and photocopies of several photographs of the school (originals in Photographic Services, North Carolina Collection).
