Historical NoteFounded in 1905 as the National Association of Hosiery and Underwear Manufacturers, by 1933, the organization focused nearly all of its research, conferences, and other services on the hosiery industry. In view of this emphasis on hosiery and of the fact that there was a separate, active organization of underwear manufacturers, the organization decided in 1933 to drop its activities related to underwear manufacture and change its name to the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers (NAHM). The National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers merged with the Southern Hosiery Manufacturers' Association on 1 January 1956. In 1999, the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers merged with the Carolina Hosiery Association to form the Hosiery Association. The Hosiery Association represents the manufacturers of more than 85 percent of the hosiery produced in the United States, providing its members with lobbying, statistical, and public relations services, and organizing conferences and trade shows. Back to TopCollection OverviewRecords of the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers, 1918-1996, include minutes of meetings of the board of directors; programs, proceedings, and other items relating to annual meetings and conferences; membership records; other papers; and videotapes of conferences in the early 1990s and of presentations on issues of interest to hosiery manufacturers. Topics include the organization's membership and financial affairs, government policy affecting the hosiery industry, labor issues, costs and prices, hosiery industry standards, research projects, and public relations. The bulk of the materials relate to the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers, but there are also records of predecessor organizations--the National Association of Hosiery and Underwear Manufacturers and the Southern Hosiery Manufacturers Association--and of related meetings, such as Hosiery Industry Conferences. About 2000 items.
Arrangement: alphabetical.
Membership records arrived at the Southern Historical Collection in three sets of binders, two sets for members and one for
associate members. It is not clear what the distinction is between the two sets of records for members. Membership record
forms for members and associate members contain spaces for name and address information, including the names of parent companies
and any name changes or mergers; products manufactured; dates of membership; sales offices or agents; brand names; personnel;
financial data; and locations of plants and offices. Few of the forms contain information for all of these items.
