| Abstract | The North Carolina Poetry Society was organized in Charlotte, N.C., in 1932, with goals of fostering the study, writing, and publication of poetry; offering North Carolina poets a chance to meet; and developing a public taste for the reading and appreciation of poetry. Gastonia poet and editor Zoe Kincaid Brockman was the first president. The collection consists of records of the North Carolina Poetry Society (NCPS). Records, 1932-1980, include correspondence, constitutions and bylaws, membership lists, information on poetry contests and copies of winning poems, clippings, and other items. Records, 1986-1990, include minutes, newsletters, information on NCPS publications and awards, materials relating to the North Carolina Poet Laureate Festival, and other items. There are also files among the earlier and later records about the Poetry Council of North Carolina, an organization sponsored by NCPS and other literary groups, that holds an annual poetry contest. Additions made to the collection after 1990 include similar materials for 1958-2003. |
