Abstract Leroy Moncure Nutt (1828-1882) of Culpeper County, Va. was a lawyer and captain of scouts in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. This collection contains papers pertaining primarily to Confederate Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877) and his men. The bulk of the collection consists of letters, 1866-1867, from veterans of Forrest's command written to Forrest or to his biographers, General Thomas Jordan (1819-1895) and J. P. Pryor. These detailed letters contain descriptions of the service of various Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and Mississippi regiments and batteries, primarily in Tennessee; sketches of fellow officers killed in the war; narratives of battles; and eyewitness accounts of Forrest himself. Also included are military messages from Forrest's adjutant regarding troop movements in the Nashville campaign, November-December 1864, and scattered personal and military papers of Leroy Moncure Nutt of Shreveport, La., captain of scouts in the Army of Tennessee.

Leroy Moncure Nutt (1828-1882) of Culpeper County, Va. was a lawyer and captain of scouts in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. In 1863, he was briefly was imprisoned in Ohio after being captured in battle of Arkansas Pest, Ark.
