Henry Houston Patterson (1884-1917) was a general merchant in Chapel Hill, N.C. Patterson was born in Orange County, N.C., served in the Confederate Army, attended the University of North Carolina, 1866-1867, and was a farmer from 1867 to 1880, when he became a merchant.

The collection includes the accounts of Henry Houston Patterson with both customers and suppliers of his general store in Chapel Hill, N.C., along with accounts for other personal and business activities, 1882-1915, and one account book for F. A. Davis, Chapel Hill, 1880-1881. Patterson handled produce, groceries, general merchandise, notions, and other items. Customers with accounts included the University of North Carolina and some of its individual departments.
