Emily Louise Pollard (1896-1972) was born in Washington, D.C., and was educated by private tutors, graduating from Miss Hills' School in Philadelphia, Pa. For a short time in the 1930s, Pollard was hostess for her uncle, Governor John Garland Pollard of Virginia. She moved to Chapel Hill, N.C., from Wynnewood, Pa., with her brother, Edward Bagby Pollard Junior, in 1939.

The collection includes travel letters and diaries of Emily Louise Pollard written while she was on trips to Europe, 1913, 1924, 1926, and 1951, and California, 1917, containing descriptions of food and accomodations and of sightseeing expeditions. Among the countries visited by Pollard were England, France, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Scotland, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Spain, the former Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Hungary. There are also letters concerning life in Chapel Hill, N.C., 1939-1941; poems, stories, and other writings by Pollard and her brother, Edward Bagby Pollard Junior, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and miscellaneous volumes, including collected eulogies honoring Emily Pollard, a commonplace book of quotations and poems, and a school yearbook.
