James Gettys McGready Ramsey (1797-1884) was a historian, railroad director, banker, and physician, of Knoxville, Tenn. He was the author of The Annals of Tennessee to the End of the Eighteenth Century. His wife was Margaret B. Crozier Ramsey.

The collection is in part typed transcript and microfilm copies. Papers include Ramsey's autobiography and very scattered letters and papers by or concerning him and members of his family, including a copy of a brief Civil War diary, mainly 1864-1866, of his wife, Margaret B. (Crozier) Ramsey, in Tennessee and as a refugee in North Carolina; clippings; Alexander family writings; Civil War recollections, "Our Women in the War," by Sue (Ramsey) Alexander; and genealogical notes on the Alexander and Ramsey families. A few letters, 1858, written by Ramsey outline a pro-slavery argument and discuss industrial development and other socio-political issues. Other papers briefly mention railroad extension, and Ramsey's education and historical works.
