Emma Lydia Rankin (1838-1908) was the daughter of Rev. Jesse Rankin, first pastor of the Presbyterian congregation in Lenoir, N.C., and Ann Delight (Salmon) Rankin. She was a teacher and conducted a school for girls known as Kirkwood and was active in church and literary activities in Lenoir.

Scope and Content
The collection includes a diary in three volumes, 1906-1908, with brief entries noting the weather and the daily activities of Emma L. Rankin while she was a school teacher in Lenoir, N.C. Also includes, her undated reminiscences of Stoneman's federal cavalry raid in western North Carolina in 1865 and a memorial booklet containing pictures of Emma and her father and articles written at the time of her death in 1908.
