Abstract
Hugh F. Rankin (1913-1989), historian of colonial America and the American Revolution, received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1959 and taught, 1957-1983, at Tulane University, where he was also faculty chair of athletics, 1962-1975. Personal and professional papers of Hugh F. Rankin include correspondence, writings, and other papers relating to Rankin's research, publications, teaching, administrative duties, participation in professional organizations, and honors and awards.

1931Graduated from Reidsville High School, Reidsville, N.C.
1931-1935Attended V.P.I. on football scholarship.
1935-1942Worked as timekeeper to superintendent in road and bridge construction, as power lineman, clothing store clerk, tobacco factory worker, and minor league professional football player.
1942-1945Private to first lieutenant, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
1943Married Betty Jean Bursley, Richmond, Va. They had three sons: Patrick Allyn, John Bursley, and Wade Dillard.
1949B.A., Elon College.
1951M.A., University of North Carolina.
1953 and 1954Worked for National Park Service, Yorktown, Va., two summers.
1955-1957Research associate, Colonial Williamsburg, Inc., Williamsburg, Va.
1959Ph.D., University of North Carolina.
